DESCRIPTION:Wet felting is a process of creating fabric by intentionally matting fibers together using water\, friction\, fat\, and heat. This transformative process takes layers of soft\, fragile wool roving and renders them into patterns\, color fields\, or imagery that are strong and durable but also soft and flexible. \nIn this workshop\, learn the process of wet felting by creating textile pieces that use imagery inspired by transformative and enduring aspects of identity. \nAll materials will be provided. \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nYasmine Kasem Kasem is an artist whose work focuses on the precariousness within the layers of identity and what it is to be Egyptian – American\, Muslim and Queer. She works in mediums of textile\, fiber and sculpture. Born and raised in central Indiana\, she received her BFA in Sculpture from Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI in 2015 and her MFA in Visual Arts at the University of California San Diego in 2019. Kasem has exhibited regionally and internationally and has work in private and public collections\, such as the San Diego Civic Art Collection. In 2021\, she was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship for emerging artists by the California Arts Council. Select exhibitions include “In the Adjacent Possible” at the John Michael Kohler Art Center\, WI 2022 and in SPRING/ BREAK NAKED LUNCH\, LA Art Fair 2023\, Visions and Nightmares at Simone Subal Gallery\, New York\, NY 2021. ‘middle’ at bread and Salt San Diego 2022. Masricani 2018\, at the San Juan Island Museum of Art in San Juan\, WA. Mwasah 2018 in Santa Ana\, CA. and Happening 2018 in Tijuana\, MX. Kasem has been artist in residence at Bread and Salt Gallery San Diego 2021\, and 1805 Gallery in San Diego in 2019.

SUMMARY:Free Interpretive Walks of the Reserve - Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the second and third Sunday of each month\, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.\, for a free interpretive nature walk. You have the opportunity to hear about the amazing plants and wildlife at Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. Walks are moderately paced on the lower creek trail and begin in front of the Elfin Forest Interpretive Center Honoring Susan J. Varty. \nAl Bates leads walks on the second Sunday of the month\, and Sabina Kurz-Sherman leads walks on the third Sunday of the month. \n  \n \nAL BATES \nRetired from law enforcement\, Al is a native San Diegan and an avid outdoorsman. Al has been trained as an interpretive guide\, is a Master Educator for the Leave No Trace Center For Outdoor Ethics and Chaparral Naturalist\, and has been a guest speaker for the Sierra Club on the topics of outdoor ethics\, backpacking\, hiking\, and camping. AI currently volunteers on the Reserve’s Trail Patrol and education teams. His talks include local plant and wild life\, how Native Americans and early pioneers used them\, and how they still benefit us and provide habitat. Join Al on the second Sunday of every month and witness a rare testimony of EFRR’s life and beauty. \n\nMay 12\nJune 9\nJuly 14\nAugust 11\nSeptember 8\nOctober 13\nNovember 10\nDecember 8\n\n\nSabina Kurz-Sherman\, Ph.D.\n\nAs a professor of biology at San Diego City College since 2006\, Sabina has been guiding her students on field trips through a variety of habitats\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub\, and oak riparian. Since her passion is helping people connect with nature\, she is happy to bring her knowledge and experience to EFRR. DESCRIPTION:Rick Harchol is a local musician that has been signed to several major recording contracts with songs and performances placed in movies and television. A live looping performer (kind of a one man band) covering R&B\, Pop\, Soul and Classic songs from the 60’s into the 2\,000’s. In addition to his live looping solo performances and playing with several local cover bands\, he plays the role of Keith Richards in three different well known southern California Rolling Stones tribute bands: Satisfaction\, The Hollywood Stones and The Ultimate Stones. He has been signed to Atco/Atlantic and Vineyard Records and was a founding member of “Outlaw Blood” Atco/Atlantic Records and “The Voices” MCA Records (co-wrote 5 songs on this album). HIs songs and performances have also appeared on HBO\, The Discovery Channel\, MTV\, CMT\, A&E\, Oprah\, RuPaul and more. He also co-wrote\, produced and performed 7 songs (including the opening and closing songs) appearing in the 2014 movie “The Identical” (wide released in over 5\,000 theaters nationwide) – starring Ray Liotta\, Ashley Judd and Seth Green.
