SUMMARY:Workshop: Wet Felting with Yasmine K. Kasem - California Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Wet felting is a process of creating fabric by intentionally matting fibers together using water\, friction\, fat\, and heat. This transformative process takes layers of soft\, fragile wool roving and renders them into patterns\, color fields\, or imagery that are strong and durable but also soft and flexible. \nIn this workshop\, learn the process of wet felting by creating textile pieces that use imagery inspired by transformative and enduring aspects of identity. \nAll materials will be provided. \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nYasmine Kasem Kasem is an artist whose work focuses on the precariousness within the layers of identity and what it is to be Egyptian – American\, Muslim and Queer. She works in mediums of textile\, fiber and sculpture. Born and raised in central Indiana\, she received her BFA in Sculpture from Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI in 2015 and her MFA in Visual Arts at the University of California San Diego in 2019. Kasem has exhibited regionally and internationally and has work in private and public collections\, such as the San Diego Civic Art Collection. In 2021\, she was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship for emerging artists by the California Arts Council. Select exhibitions include “In the Adjacent Possible” at the John Michael Kohler Art Center\, WI 2022 and in SPRING/ BREAK NAKED LUNCH\, LA Art Fair 2023\, Visions and Nightmares at Simone Subal Gallery\, New York\, NY 2021. ‘middle’ at bread and Salt San Diego 2022. Masricani 2018\, at the San Juan Island Museum of Art in San Juan\, WA. Mwasah 2018 in Santa Ana\, CA. and Happening 2018 in Tijuana\, MX. Kasem has been artist in residence at Bread and Salt Gallery San Diego 2021\, and 1805 Gallery in San Diego in 2019.

Sound healing is a great way to improve your physical\, mental\, and emotional well-being. \n  \nWhat is a sound bath?\nIt is called a Sound Bath because it feels like the sounds are washing over you. \nSound Healing is also known as Sound Therapy or Vibrational Medicine. Sound Therapy works on the principle that everything is vibration. Sound healing therapy is the therapeutic application of sound and vibration in order to create the environment for the body to go into its own natural healing processes. It is the practice of using sound and frequency for relaxation\, healing and personal development. \nSound can facilitate shifts in our brainwave states by entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes fluctuating brainwaves by providing a stable frequency to which the brainwave can attune. Combinations of rhythms and frequencies make it possible to shift from our normal beta state (alert\, waking\, concentrating\, reacting) to alpha (creative\, relaxed)\, and even theta (meditative state) and delta (deep sleep; where restoring and healing can occur).  Shifting brainwave states elicits the relaxation response in the body\, turning on the parasympathetic nervous system state.Participants typically lie down on a vessel and are guided into the water by our team.  They close their eyes and focus on their breath as wave after wave of sound washes over them.  Elizabeth\, our fabulous sound healer facilitates using combinations of frequencies to prepare the nervous system to go into the parasympathetic nervous system state. This creates the environment for the body to go into its own natural healing often relieving stress\, and reducing pain. \nInstruments used may include\, but are not limited to : quartz crystal bowls\, himalayan bowls\, gongs\, drums\, shakers\, chimes\, bells\, tingshas\, and voice to name a few. \nWhat happens if I fall asleep? \nOur team will monitor guests who are floating.  While it does happen\, most often you’re not drifting off to sleep but entering what is call the Theta brain state – the space in between conscious\, alertness and unconscious sleep. It is the brain waves that are activated by meditation. \nCan I float if I’m pregnant? \nThe conditions of every pregnancy can be different and all expecting mothers should seek the approval of their doctor before floating. However\, in general\, after your first trimester it is safe to float and many have found floating to be a great relief due to the weightlessness of the body while floating. Floating is also a wonderful way to bond with your baby. \nWhat should I wear? \nYou can float fully clothed!  There is no need for bathing suits.  We advise against long pants/jeans just in case your ankles get wet when embarking/disembarking your vessel.  We recommend loose\, comfortable clothing. \nWhen is sound healing beneficial? \nWhen you have a concern about a physical condition and want to use sound therapy alongside conventional medicine because relaxed patients have lower stress hormones\, stronger immune systems\, and better tools to cope with the psychological and physical effects of their disease and treatment. \n​When you feel stuck emotionally. If you want to move forward\, let go of what no longer serve you or shift old patterns that keep repeating in your life. If you want to reconnect with yourself\, shift your perception of feeling lost or disconnected. \nWhen you have trouble sleeping. \nOr whenever you feel like you need to de-stress or unwind. \nMany experience a theta state of mind or 8Hz frequency during a sound healing session. This state is often associated with creativity\, productivity and it may be able to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation.  It not only helps with inducing relaxation\, but also has a way of moving through areas of blockage to move stagnant energy\, release energy patterns and habits that are no longer serving you\, and bring your body\, mind and spirit back into alignment. \nDo I need to bring anything? \nJust yourself! Towels\, a blanket\, a pillow and an eye mask will be provided before your session.  At the end of the session\, there will be a hydration break and time to come back to the present. \nAre there any weight or size restrictions for floating? \nOur vessels have been tested with floaters weighing up to 250 pounds who have been able to float without issue. Feel free to come in and try it! If for some reason it simply doesn’t work\, we’ll refund you! (note: this has never happened) \nIs there an age limit? \nAt this time\, the float sessions are open to guests aged 18 and over \nIs sound healing safe? \nSound healing is generally safe for most people. However\, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any new health practice\, especially if you have a history of health conditions or are currently taking medication. \nWill there be a lot of people in my float session? \nWe conduct small group sessions to ensure the experience is intimate and not overwhelming.  Each session will accommodate approximately 15 participants or fewer. From regional tectonics to massive volcanism\, uplift and erosion\, and the many current infrastructure challenges San Diego currently faces\, Mike Thacker will tell the story behind our broad mesas\, dramatic coastlines\, canyons\, and wide valleys. Attendees will be sure to come away with a deepened understanding of and appreciation for the geological history of our unique region. \nCost: Pay what you wish \nRegister for In-Person Lecture \n\nAbout the Presenter \nMike Thacker is a retired Senior Staff Research and Development Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He has a B.S. in zoology from San Diego State University and studied anthropology and archaeology at University of California Santa Barbara\, Palomar College\, and San Diego State University. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the San Diego Archaeological Center since 2018 and is a volunteer teaching assistant for Palomar College archaeological excavation field school and survey programs. Mike is passionate about his home of San Diego and leads interpretive hikes for the San Dieguito River Park and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. His interest in geology has motivated his study of the geology of the San Diego region for the last 14 years.

DESCRIPTION:These classes are facilitated by Igor Koutsenko in conjunction with Escondido Art Association and take place in Studio 2 at California Center for the Arts\, Escondido. Instruction will be given for acrylic and oil painting and students must bring their own supplies including easels. \nClasses run 9:30am to noon every Wednesday in Studio 2.\nCost is $25 per class \nQuestion for the instructor? \nThe studios can be reached easiest by parking on the east side of CCAE’s north parking lot. Studios entrance is across from the Escondido History Center.
